Dr. Kiran C. Patel is the ideal “poster child” for Immigrant Achievements. He has excelled in education, business, and giving back to the community.
Born in Zambia, Africa Dr. Patel immigrated to USA in 1976.
He got his medical education in Ahmedabad-Gujarat. He completed his Medical Residency and specialization in Cardiology at the Columbia University-affiliated program in New York. While in practice in the Tampa Bay area, Dr. Kiran Patel earned a respected reputation as a most loved Cardiologist and gained a unique vision of the future of the medical care since 1990. Rather than shun the growing trend toward managed health care, he began to develop solutions that made sense form the physician’s point of view.
Dr. Kiran Patel started a physician-owned, physician-run, health plan – WellCare which grew to become the largest Medicaid HMO in Florida, serving more than 200,000 members. In 1999 he acquired a struggling New York/Connecticut HMO and together the companies became WellCare Management Group with revenues of more than a billion, served more than 400,000 lives and employed more than 1,200. He sold Wellcare in 2003.
He went on to start another managed care business. Today amongst the MAPD Plans, Freedom/Optimum Medicare HMO ranks #2 in the State of Florida. The group employs more than 1000 and revenues exceed 1 Billion Dollars.
Dr. Kiran Patel was a President of AAPI-American Association of Physicians of Indian Origins, the largest ethnic group in the USA – in year 2006-2007 and chaired two grand conventions in 2005 and 2006.
Dr. Patel together with his wife, Dr. Pallavi Patel, has earned a reputation for generosity for developing and funding variety of programs in health, education, arts and culture, both locally and around the world through Drs. Kiran & Pallavi Patel Foundation for Global Understanding.
